Background
In a dramatic turn of events, thoughts continue for the speedy recovery of Shadrack Nsua, who was injured in a motor vehicle accident. Meanwhile, the defending champion Luke Michael has accepted a late replacement—new challenger Siyakudumisa Nomvemve—as the main event title fight at EFC 125.
The co-main event promises to steal the show with a classic old school/new school clash. It features another outstanding power-packing wrestler returning as Hanru ‘The Bully’ Botha, who aims to send Ayand Zwane back down the rankings and lay claim to the belt that has eluded him for over 12 years. However, Zwane is a shape-shifter in his stand-up game, with footwork and head movement that seem to bend time. All it takes is one punch between these two warriors willing to risk everything.
Once again, EFC fans will be chanting ‘Boumaye’ in the hope of a landscape-levelling knockout from returning heavyweight Christophe Walravens, who faces Senegalese strangler Adama Diop. Walravens previously discarded fellow behemoth Nico Yamdjie after his last walk to the Hex, but has yet to face an opponent of Walravens's impressive power and Fight IQ—whose first-round finishes are among the best in the promotion’s history.
Before the main card, the event features a massive Congo versus Zambia lightweight clash between Kaleka Kabanda and Dante Mulenga. It also includes a fascinating catchweight bout between two rising stars, Terrence Born and Tico van der Berg. The undercard consists of 14 fighters—contenders and former challengers—all determined to make runs for gold in their respective divisions before the year’s end.
Main Event Face-off:
Main eventers Luke Michael, the defending middleweight champion, and challenger Siyakudumiso Nomvemve, had to be separated repeatedly during their face-off at the World Sports Betting Arena in Johannesburg, igniting fight week fireworks three days before they headline EFC 125 on Thursday.
It started with lowered voices and mutual respect on the microphones, behind the tables, and in front of the press. But as Cape Town’s Michael squared up to Secunda’s Nomvemve, civility suddenly slipped away, and a reservoir of bad blood exploded. Heads connected, and a fracas ensued, causing the belt to tumble to the floor. Both fighters had to be kept apart by EFC staff for an extended period. Even afterward, as commentator Simon Stephens interviewed matchmaker Graeme Cartmell, the arguing and shoving continued in front of a kinetic crowd.
